About the grant
In January 2010, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation selected United Way to assist in developing teacher effectiveness efforts. The foundation provided United Way Worldwide funding for Increasing Teacher Effectiveness Challenge Grants at 14 United Way offices in Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee to advance their efforts to positively impact education.
The grants align with UWW's national education goals to cut high-school dropout numbers in half by 2018 and better prepare students for college or post-secondary learning success. The grants also offer states and local communities help in developing communication, advocacy and mobilization strategies to increase teacher effectiveness. With years of success in community engagement, United Way of Florida was the perfect choice to serve as a state grant recipient and share its relationships, resources, and knowledge relevant to Empowering Effective Teachers across Florida.
Why Focus on Teacher Effectiveness?
Teacher effectiveness is a key determinant of whether children will succeed in school, regardless of their background.
? Teachers are the primary in-school influence on student performance.
Empowering Effective Teachers matters to United Way of Florida, our members, colleagues and neighbors. Over the coming months, we will be providing opportunities for neighbors and colleagues to listen, learn and discuss issues from a local perspective that will encourage the building of strong community alliances. When everyday voices become unified advocates for education, a true representation of the diverse nature of Florida's people, views, voices and political perspectives will be heard.
Every Floridian plays a role in education, make yours a positive one through Empowering Effective Teachers.
United Way of Florida Grant Organizing Team Mission UWOF organizers endeavor to assist Florida's local United Way grantees and community alliances to better define, understand, mobilize and implement strategies that will empower effective teachers to change policy and practice to enable success for all our students.
